Abstract
Geographic locations for 81 explosions at the Balapan test site in Kazakhstan are derived with a precision of about 200 m from time-sequence LANDSAT MSS and SPOT satellite images combined with teleseismic epicenter estimates. The LANDSAT images were registered to ground control points from a SPOT image to provide high relative accuracy for feature comparison. Initial seismic location estimates for the explosions were derived using joint epicenter determination. For most events, there is little or no ambiguity in the association between seismic events and image features, owing to the frequency of the LANDSAT images and the spatial separation between explosions.
