Seismic event detection and source location using single-station (three-component) data

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO, ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO 87131

Abstract

The seismic event detection and source location scheme presented in this paper uses single-station seismic data to analyze seismic events. To detect events, "the detection scheme" combines the signals on the horizontal components in a manner analogous to beam steering. Once an event is detected, "the location scheme" estimates the location of the source with respect to the receiver by estimating the polarization direction of the Pn phase. The range estimate is then obtained from the relative timing of different phases.
