Abstract

Surface displacements associated with the field scattered by embedded cavities and inclusions when P, SV, and Rayleigh waves are incident on them are studied in this paper. An exact method of analysis has been used to analyze the scattred surface displacements for the cases of a circular cylindrical cavity and inclusion embedded in a half-space. Also, a hybrid finite element and eigenfunction expansion method is used to study scattering by an elliptical inclusion and cavity. For circular cavity, results obtained by both methods are shown to compare very well. Numerical results are presented showing the comparisons of the surface displacements caused by circular and elliptical cavities. Also presented are some results for the case of a rectangular cavity in the presence of an elliptical inclusion.
