A land-ocean bottom seismograph experiment in the Mariana forearc

Abstract

A network of land and ocean-bottom seismographs in the north central Mariana Islands located 20 earthquakes during a 22-day recording period. The locations of 14 subcrustal events define an inclined seismic zone extending to approximately 280 km depth, with one isolated event at 580 km depth. The geometry of this zone coincides with that defined by teleseismic earthquake locations. No reliably located earthquakes occurred within the accretionary prism, consistent with the hypothesis that deformation within the accretionary prism takes place aseismically.
