Variations in seismicity as a fundamental tool in earthquake prediction

Abstract

Refraining from expressing mere opinions, this report attempts to classify and synthesize results of recent seismological studies for earthquake prediction in order to allow the reader to make an independent evaluation of the progress of this program to date. The general conclusion is that significant progress has been made in the research for earthquake prediction during the last 5 yr. Eightysix references are cited which have been published during this time period. Of course, new work and opportunities lie ahead, but this is a consequence of significant successes and accomplishments to date.

This report is intended as an overview, and the references cited are not a complete list of all works related to the rather broad topic. The reader can obtain detailed references for a particular aspect by referring to the works cited. Hopefully, those authors whose work is not mentioned specifically will accept this apology.
