Analysis of broadband seismograms from the Chile-eru area

RAINER KIND and DIETER SEIDL

SEISMOLOGISCHES ZENTRALOBSERVATORIUM, KRANKENHAUSSTRASSE 1, 8520 ERLANGEN West Germany

Abstract

Broadband seismograms, recorded at the Graefenberg (GRF) Array in Germany are analyzed. These data from the Chile-Peru area have often a very complicated signature. We have attempted to identify pP using theoretical seismograms. A third phase besides P and pP, which may have higher frequencies, was discovered in a number of broadband records. Interpretations that relate this phase to the source or the structure are discussed. Our preferred interpretation is an S to P conversion at the bottom of the descending plate.
