Deformation in Owens Valley, California

J. C. SAVAGE and M. LISOWSKI

U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, 345 MIDDLEFIELD ROAD, MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA 94025

Abstract

Surveys in 1974 and 1979 of a Geodolite network spanning Owens Valley between Bishop and Lone Pine, California, indicate that right-lateral tensor shear strain is accumulating across the 1872 earthquake rupture at a rate of about 0.08 ± 0.03 µstrain/a. The quoted uncertainty is one standard deviation. Neither the measured extension (0.01 ± 0.03 µstrain/a) perpendicular to the rupture nor the contraction (0.01 ± 0.03 µstrain/a) parallel to it is significant. This strain rate is consistent with that deduced for the preceding 40 yr. Level lines that run across the valley at the latitude of Lone Pine indicate no significant tectonic changes in elevation between 1974 and 1978. Comparison of these surveys with earlier surveys (1928, 1940, and 1962) establishes quite clearly that the block west of the 1872 rupture has been tilted down to the east about 7.5 ± 1.5 µrad in the 50-yr interval 1928 to 1978.
