Abstract

This paper continues the work previously presented concerning an interactive method for epicenter location. Starting from very simple assumptions about the behaviour of a wave front, the method is derived using elementary geometric notions, and a system of transcendental equations is obtained which is solved numerically to yield surfaces of feasible epicenters. A statistical framework is then developed in order to obtain point estimates and confidence regions for the true epicenter. The method has been tested extensively, comparing it with other conventional procedures, and the results indicate that it is an efficient approach to the problem of epicenter location. A number of examples are examined in full in order to illustrate its application.
