Stability of P travel times in the region of La Malbaie, Québec

DIVISION OF SEISMOLOGY AND GEOTHERMAL STUDIES EARTH PHYSICS BRANCH DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY, MINES & RESOURCES, OTTAWA, ONTARIO Canada

Abstract

An experiment to test the stability of travel times in the La Malbaie region of Quebec was started in 1974. The region has been subjected to large earthquakes since at least 1663. The last large event occurred in 1925. Admitting estimated errors of ± 16 msec the data show a maximum change in travel time of three times the estimated errors, as determined by cross-correlation between wave forms of timed explosions from two sites on the north and south shores of the St. Lawrence River, respectively. Of the significant changes in travel time, all but one are delays. The experiment covers a span of 38 months, and continues.
