Abstract
Dispersion characteristics of Love waves in a transversely isotropic and laterally inhomogeneous surface layer lying over a homogeneous half-space are studied. The simple concept of constructive interference of the ray theory has been applied to overcome the difficulties encountered in the wave theory approach for solving such problems. The Love-wave frequency equation for a two-layered model, considering power law variations of the layer parameters in the crust, is derived. Theoretical dispersion curves are presented to evince the effect of assumed variations on Love-wave propagation in the crust.
