The response of a linear viscoelastic solid to a weak spherical explosion

Abstract

We study spherical waves which are produced by a weak spherical explosion in a linear viscoelastic solid. The wave front, final displacement, and stress fields, and the large time velocity and stress signals are examined. It is shown that the large time velocity and stress signals are dominated by a wave which has the character of a diffuse N wave propagating with the equilibrium speed of sound and decaying inversely as the square of the radial distance.
