Abstract

Seismic refraction profiles in the southern Indian Ocean are described. The profiles in the Transkei Basin show that its sediment thickness is 2 km over an area estimated as 300,000 km2. A long profile fired on the Mozambique Terrace shows that this structure is compensated, the masses of columns to depths of 30 km varying by only 2.3 per cent for the Terrace and the adjacent ocean basins.
