Abstract
This paper reports the results of a seismic refraction profile on the continental shelf to the south of South Africa. Anchored buoys served as receiving stations at sea. Two stations on land operated during part of the shooting program. At some stages of the experiment, the noise level was unusually low and 24-kg shots were recorded at distances of 180 km. The arrival times beyond 120 km showed a surprisingly high apparent velocity of 8.9 km/sec. It is considered improbable that the high apparent velocity was the result of a dipping Mohorovicic discontinuity.
