Seismic anisotropy of the uppermost mantle absent beneath the east flank of the Reykjanes Ridge

Abstract

A seismic refraction experiment was carried out 200 miles southeast of the Reykjanes Ridge and a normal oceanic crustal structure was observed. Analysis of 70 compressional-wave arrivals led to the conclusion that seismic anisotropy of the uppermost mantle may not exist here. A new model for the origin of anisotropy is proposed which predicts that the minimum velocity will always be found along a direction parallel to linear oceanic magnetic anomalies.
