Energy released in the BENHAM aftershocks

BARBARA K. CROWLEY and LAWRENCE S. GERMAIN

LAWRENCE RADIATION LABORATORY UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LIVERMORE, CALIFORNIA 94550

Abstract

The aftershock activity of the BENHAM explosion, which occurred over an area of 100 km2 and lasted for several weeks, was far more intensive than that following JORUM and HANDLEY. However, the radiated seismic energy of the after-shocks was only of the order of one-hundredth of the energy of BENHAM that coupled into seismic wave motion. The aftershock volume of BENHAM does not appear to be significantly different from the volume for aftershocks from a natural event of the same body-wave magnitude.
