The focusing of earthquakes

P. S. JACKSON

DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED MATHEMATICS AND THEORETICAL PHYSICS CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY, CAMBRIDGE, England

Abstract

Many regions subjected to uniform seismic excitation are characterized by relatively small areas of intense damage. This paper examines the effects of geological inhomogeneity, and the related focusing of seismic rays, as a possible cause of this phenomenon. The analysis uses the progressing wave technique to calculate ray paths and amplification factors for typical geological configurations.
