Performance of school buildings in the Peru earthquake of May 31, 1970

JOHN F. MEEHAN

SCHOOLHOUSE SECTION OFFICE OF ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SERVICES STATE OF CALIFORNIA

Abstract

The paper reports a field investigation of school buildings in the devastated area of this earthquake. Most school buildings did not collapse. Portions of one in Casma and Huaraz collapsed and many were damaged. Had the earthquake occurred in school hours, injury and death would have been high. Specific structural recommendations are made.
