Abstract
The calculation of the periods of the free modes of torsional oscillations of an inhomogeneous earth, as well as the phase and group velocities of Love waves on an inhomogeneous sphere, can be performed by evaluating the properties of an isotropic flat-earth structure derived from the spherical structure. The differences between spherical- and flat-earth phase and group velocities can be expressed as polynomials in the periods up to 600 sec.
