Seismicity of Iranian Plateau and Hindu Kush region

MANSOUR NIAZI and JEFFREY R. BASFORD

PHYSICS DEPARTMENT PAHLAVI UNIVERSITY, SHIRAZ, Iran

Abstract

Over 1400 earthquakes of magnitude 4 and above which occurred between 20° and 40° North Latitudes and between 40° and 75° East Longitudes during the decade ending on June 30, 1967 are analysed. On the basis of the computed strain release, seismicity maps are constructed for the first and second halves of the period. Three or possibly four seismic zones in the eastern Turkey-Caucasus region, along the marginal heights of the Iranian Plateau, in the Hindu Kush region, and West Pakistan are delineated. The magnitude-frequency relationship of the earthquakes which occurred in Iran during this period is discussed.
