Abstract
During the course of experiments with a system of ocean bottom explosions and hydrophones, trains of dispersed waves were observed. Phase velocities of between 130 and 60 m per sec were measured for frequencies of between 3 and 10 cps. The propagation is identified as of Stoneley wave type, and from the results a shear velocity structure in the upper sediments is obtained. The velocity increases from 50 to 190 m per sec in the first 16 metres below the bottom.
