High frequency microearthquakes recorded at Quetta, Pakistan

JOHN DENOYER

ACOUSTICS AND SEISMICS LABORATORY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN

Abstract

Numerous high frequency microearthquakes were recorded on a special portable magnetic tape recorder at Quetta, Pakistan, during the summer of 1962. These microearthquakes have maximum particle velocities between 30 and 50 cps. Many of the foci appear to be almost directly under the recording station. The focal distance for the nearest of these earthquakes appears to be less than one km. The source for these earthquakes may result from "bedding plane slippage" as strain accumulates in sediments adjacent to a high angle fault.
