Abstract
A second phase arriving about 10 seconds later than the first P wave is seen on many seismograms used by Stauder (1960) in his study of the Alaska earthquake of July 10, 1958. Treating this event as an independent occurrence, it is proposed that this second event was caused by a "jerk" during the course of the propagation of the fault. Agreement with the fault mechanisms proposed by Stauder (1960) and Ben-Menahem and Toksoz (1963) is satisfactory.
