A frequency-velocity-energy diagram for the study of dispersive surface waves

H. M. IYER

METEOROLOGICAL OFFICE, BRACKNELL, BERKS. England.

Abstract

A technique for displaying the dispersion effect of surface waves in terms of energy contours on a frequency-velocity diagram is described. Preliminary results from analysis of data from an earthquake in Chile as recorded in Sweden show that predominant Rayleigh phases occur at periods of 16 and 25 sec and the corresponding velocities are 2.9 and 3.5 km/sec respectively. A Love phase of period 40 sec and velocity 4.1 km/sec is also noticed. Spectral analysis and coherence studies confirm the formation of these phases. The results are preliminary and tend to illustrate the usefulness of the technique for analysis of surface waves from earthquakes.
