Relation between geology and the damage in Puerto Montt, Chile, caused by the earthquake of 22 May 1960

Abstract

The damage in Puerto Montt resulted from landsliding, debris flows, mud flows, and settling of unconsolidated alluvium and artificial fill. Structures on high terraces, away from the edges, were undamaged.
