Abstract
A new seismic wave detector incorporating a gyroscope is described and analyzed. The instrument can attain separation of linear and angular movements of seismic piers. High sensitivity is obtained by virtue of the gryroscopic characteristics. A further advantage lies in the facility with which the natural frequency of a gyro-seismometer can be varied by changing its spin velocity. The instrument probably is very valuable for distant seismic detections, for which the periods are large. The ability to isolate and measure angular movements may be of particular interest in applications to nuclear test monitoring. A simple, mathematical treatment of the instrument is presented in this paper.
