Period measurements of structures in Chile

WILLIAM K. CLOUD

U. S. COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY SEISMOLOGICAL FIELD SURVEY, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

Abstract

Following the Chilean earthquakes of May, 1960 measurements were made of the natural periods of vibration of steel stacks, elevated water tanks, commercial buildings and other structures. A vibrational analysis of an elevated water tank shows how the measured period provides information about the physical properties of a structure. It is recommended that more extensive measurement of periods be undertaken in Chile.
