The mechanism at the focus of an earthquake

Abstract

The displacement of a homogeneous medium has been calculated supposing the movement to be generated by a time-harmonic stress on a sphere. This primary stress is defined by the radial pressure on the focal sphere and by two functions describing the variation of the tangential stress along its surface. These functions are developed into series of spherical harmonics and the partial movement corresponding to each term of these series determined. The theory also treats stress systems exerting a moment on the focal region; such systems are not considered in previous investigations.
