Intensity distribution and strong-motion seismograph results, Nevada earthquakes of December 16, 1954

WILLIAM K. CLOUD

U. S. COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY, SEISMOLOGICAL FIELD SURVEY

Abstract

Data from strong-motion seismographs and from intensity studies of the December 16, 1954, Nevada, earthquakes are presented, together with limited comparison to earlier Nevada shocks and to the Kern County, California, earthquake of 1952. Intensity results show a felt area of 220,000 square miles, and a maximum Modified Mercalli Scale intensity of VII based on vibratory effects. Seismograph results, available only from distant stations, indicate maximum accelerations of 29 cm/sec.2 at 130 miles and 2 cm/sec.2 at 470 miles.
