The scattering of a tsunami by a cylindrical island*

GUY C. OMER, JR and HAROLD H. HALL

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS, UNIVERSITY OF OREGON,, EUGENE, OREGON

Abstract

THE THEORETICAL scattering of a plane ocean wave of great wave length by a cylindrical island is developed. The pattern of the predicted maximum wave heights about the periphery of the island is found to be approximately that observed around the island of Kauai during the tsunami of April 1, 1946.
