New evidence for a change in physical conditions at depths near 100 kilometers*

B. GUTENBERG and CHARLES F. RICHTER

SEISMOLOGICAL LABORATORY,, PASADENA, CALIFORNIA

Abstract

Seismograms of South American earthquakes at depths down to 260 km. recorded at Huancayo, Peru, are used to confirm and extend the conclusion that a slight decrease in the velocity of longitudinal waves occurs at a depth of about 80 km.
